\nWhy am I wearing glasses in all those pictures you ask? Especially since everybody knows just how much I hate doing that? Well, I\u2019ll tell you.
\nA little over a week ago I finally had an appointment to get evaluated for an ICL\u00ae\u00a0(implantable collamer lens) procedure. Since my eyes are too bad to do lasik, that\u2019s my only option if I ever want to be rid of contacts or glasses for good. I got referred to a doctor in Columbia by my optometrist in Macon and had a first examination after being out of contacts for 24 hours. That examination went well and they think I qualify well since nothing is wrong with my eyes other than my severe nearsightedness. So after getting information on the procedure, recovery and costs, I\u2019ve scheduled it for November 11th<\/sup>. The whole thing is quite a process however: First I have to be out of my contacts for two weeks plus one week for every decade I have worn them (which equals about 3.5 weeks total), because the cornea changes shape when one wears gas permeable lenses and has to go back to normal first. Now most of you have seen my glasses, some of you have even tried them on \u2013 this will be the hardest part about it for me for sure. On November 3rd<\/sup> I will have a thorough examination with fully dilated pupils to determine the exact prescription of the lenses and to make sure my eyes indeed qualify for the procedure. If so, I have to go back on the 9th<\/sup> to get two tiny holes lasered into the top part of each eye as a way to relieve pressure and ensure proper drainage during the actual surgery. That surgery will happen on the afternoon of the 11th<\/sup> if all goes well until then and should only take about an hour total (for both eyes). I will be sedated but awake for the surgery (\u201cmost patients are quite happy\u201d they said ^^) during which they will make a small cut to insert the folded lens behind my pupil where it will unfold. Results are immediate and although they can\u2019t guarantee me 20\/20 vision, they (and I) are confident that it will be a huge improvement to what I have now. If I can\u2019t see perfectly after, it\u2019s actually possible to do a lasik treatment later on to reach 20\/20. So if you talk to me at any point before November 11th<\/sup> I will probably be bitching about having to wear my glasses. But I expect afterwards I will be exceedingly happy to have done it!<\/p>\n
\nVor etwas \u00fcber einer Woche war ich endlich bei meinem ersten Untersuchungstermin f\u00fcr eine ICL\u00ae (quasi eine im Auge implantierte Kontaktlinse) OP. Da meine Augen aufgrund meiner extremen Kurzsichtigkeit nicht gelastert werden k\u00f6nnen, ist das der einzige Weg auf dem ich je dauerhaft ohne Kontaktlinsen oder Brille sehen k\u00f6nnte. Nach einer \u00dcberweisung meines Augenarzts in Macon an einen Spezialisten in Columbia, hatte ich dort also k\u00fcrzlich meine erste Untersuchung nach 24 Stunden ohne Kontaktlinsen. Die Untersuchung lief gut und der Arzt h\u00e4lt mich f\u00fcr geeignet, da meinen Augen au\u00dfer extremer Kurzsichtigkeit nichts zu fehlen scheint. Nachdem ich die ganzen Infos zum ICL-Prozess, der OP, der Heilung die zum Thema Kosten bekommen und in Ruhe angeschaut hatte, habe ich die OP auf den 11. November festgezetzt. Das Ganze ist ein ziemlicher Akt: Zuerst muss ich\u00a0 2 Wochen plus eine Woche f\u00fcr jede Dekade mit Kontaktlinsen (also dreieinhalb Wochen insgesamt) ohne Kontaktlinsen auskommen, da sich die Augen mit harten Linsen etwas verformen und erst wieder zur Originalform zur\u00fcck m\u00fcssen. Die meisten von euch kennen meine Brille und einige von euch hatten sie auch schon mal an \u2013 das wird mit Sicherheit das H\u00e4rteste an der ganzen Sache f\u00fcr mich. Am 3. November werde ich nochmal mit geweiteten Pupillen gr\u00fcndlichst untersucht um sicherzugehen, dass ich geeignet bin und um die St\u00e4rke der Implantate festzulegen. Falls das gut l\u00e4uft, gehe ich am 9. wieder hin um 2 ganz kleine L\u00f6cher am oberen Rand jedes Auges gelasert zu bekommen. Diese dienen als Ablaufkanal f\u00fcr Fl\u00fcssigkeiten und um den Augeninnendruck w\u00e4hrend der OP zu verringern. So denn das alles gut geht, findet die tats\u00e4chliche OP dann am 11. November nachmittags statt \u2013 das dauert nur eine Stunde insgesamt (f\u00fcr beide Augen). Man bekommt w\u00e4hrend der OP ein Beruhigungsmittel aber keine Vollnarkose (\u201edie meisten Patienten sind ganz gl\u00fccklich\u201c wurde mir versichert ^^) und dann gibts einen kleinen Schnitt am oberen Augenrand durch den die gefaltete Linse hinter die Pupille geschoben wird, um sich dort zu entfalten. Ergebnisse merkt man sofort und obwohl es keine Garantie f\u00fcr eine 100%ige Beseitigung der Kurzsichtigkeit gibt, sind der Arzt und ich uns sicher, dass es eine riesen Verbesserung zum aktuellen Staus Quo sein wird. Man k\u00f6nnte nach den Implantaten sogar noch lasern, falls diese nicht zu 100% Sehf\u00e4higkeit f\u00fchren. Wer also vor dem 11. November noch mit mir spricht wird mich vermutlich \u00fcber das konstante Brillen-tragen jammern h\u00f6ren. Aber ich sch\u00e4tze hinterher werde ich extrem froh sein, es gemacht zu haben.<\/strong><\/p>\n
