On July 20th it was finally time for the long-planned Germany trip and 5 of 7 Mapleses set out early in the morning from Macon. From there to Columbia, then onto a shuttle bus to Kansas City, a short flight from Kansas City to Atlanta and then the long one from Atlanta to D\u00fcsseldorf. It was actually one of the most enjoyable long-distance flights I’ve ever had: Bill, Adam and I occupied the last row of the plane and spend most of our time playing cards and trivia. We also did have a few drinks. Just a few ;-). Once we got to Germany it was only another shuttle ride until we made it to Refrath and my parents‘ house where we spent most of our day just trying to stay awake (successfully).
\nAm 20. Juli war es endlich Zeit, den schon lange geplanten Deutschlandtrip zu starten und 5 von 7 Mapleses verlie\u00dfen Macon fr\u00fch am Morgen. Von dort aus ging es nach Columbia, in einem Shuttle Bus nach Kansas City und mit einem ersten kurzen Flug nach Atlanta. Von Atlanta folgte der Langstrecken-Flug nach D\u00fcsseldorf – einer der besten, die ich je hatte. Bill, Adam und ich sa\u00dfen in der letzten Reihe und verbrachten den gr\u00f6\u00dften Teil des Fluges mit Kartenspielen und Allgemeinwissen-Quiz. Ein paar Drinks haben wir uns auch genehmigt. Nur ein paar ;-). Nachdem wir es endlich nach Deutschland geschafft hatten, folgte nur noch ein weiterer Shuttle-Bus bis Refrath und zu meinen Eltern, bei denen wir den gr\u00f6\u00dften Teil unseres Tages damit verbrachten, (erfolgreich) wach zu bleiben.<\/strong>

\nOur first full day in Germany started very well indeed with a first trip to K\u00f6ln and a visit to the Zoo as well as a ride on the Seilbahn to Rheinpark where we sat by the Rhine and spent some time in the local playground.
\nUnser erster ganzer Tag in Deutschland startete sehr gut mit einem ersten Trip nach K\u00f6ln, einem Besuch im Zoo und einer Seilbahn-Fahrt in den Rheinpark, wo wir erst am Rhein sa\u00dfen und dann etwas Zeit auf dem Spielplatz verbrachten.<\/strong>

\nAfter picking up the remaining 2 Mapleses the day after and doing a little tour of K\u00f6ln’s downtown including the climb to the top of the tower of K\u00f6lner Dom, the rest of that day was spent touring a few of K\u00f6ln’s best breweries and sampling the K\u00f6lsch. We may have stayed out just a tad too late or maybe it was the no. of K\u00f6lsch consumed ^^, but getting up on Friday seems a little hard for some of our fellowship.
\nGet up we did however, because we had quite the trip planned. Liz’s Dad Bernd hat taken it upon himself to show some of his favorite spots to „the Americans“ and rented a bus that seated nine. So after a brief stop at the Birkenstock factory store (some Mapleses desperatly wanted houseshoes like mine :D), we made our way South along the Rhine, through pretty towns like Linz and Remagen. After a short ferry ride to the other side we climbed the hills into the Eiffel and drove by the many volcanoes towards our first stop: Castle Eltz, also known as the sneaky castle. Why you ask? Because it is hidden in a valley and you really don’t see it at all until you’re right in front of it.
\nAfter Castle Eltz, an English tour and lunch we made our way to Beilstein an der Mosel which is a beautiful little town right by the river and surrounded by vineyards on steep hills (we took a little detour driving through some of them which was mostly exciting due to the narrowness of the road). Our last planned stop had to be cancelled due to traffic problems, however we enjoyed an awesome dinner at Liz’s parents‘ house and loved the day and places we got to go. Many thanks to all the R\u00fcbs, we hope to be able to extend the same hospitality to you guys over here some time!<\/p>\n

Die restlichen 2 Mapleses haben wir am n\u00e4chsten Tag eingesammelt und direkt eine kleine Tour der K\u00f6lner Altstadt inklusive Dombesteigung angeh\u00e4ngt. Den Rest des Tages verbrachten wir in diversen Brauh\u00e4usern mit intensiven K\u00f6lsch-Proben – vielleicht sind wir dabei ein bisschen zu lange aufgeblieben oder haben ein paar K\u00f6lsch zu viel getrunken ^^, aber das Aufstehen am Freitag war nicht f\u00fcr alle von uns einfach.
\n<\/strong>Aufgestanden sind wir trotzdem alle – wir hatten gro\u00dfe Pl\u00e4ne. Liz‘ Papa hatte es auf sich genommen, „den Amis“ einige seiner Lieblingsstellen zu zeigen und kurzerhand einen Bus f\u00fcr 9 gemietet. Nach einem kurzen Stop beim Birkenstock-Fabrikverkauf (einige Mapleses wollten unbedingt Hausschuhe wie meine :D), fuhren wir durch sch\u00f6ne St\u00e4dtchen wie Linz und Remagen gen S\u00fcden den Rhein entlang. Nach einer kurzen F\u00e4hr\u00fcberfahrt ging es in die Berge und in die Eiffel; durch die Vulkane zu unserem ersten Stop: Burg Eltz, auch bekannt als die heimliche Burg. Warum? Da sie in einem Tal versteckt ist und man die Burg wirklich gar nicht sieht, bis man direkt vor ihr steht.
\nNach dem Burgbesuch inklusive englischer Tour und Mittagessen fuhren wir weiter nach Beilstein an der Mosel, einer h\u00fcbschen kleinen Stadt direkt am Fluss und inmitten von Weinbergen an steilen H\u00e4ngen (wir nahmen einen kleinen Umweg dorthin und fuhren durch einige Weinberge, was vor allem wegen der schmalen Stra\u00dfe aufregend war). Unser letzter geplanter Stop fiel aufgrund von Verkehrsproblemen leider aus, also ging es direkt zu einem gro\u00dfartigen Abendessen im Haus von Liz‘ Eltern. Alle hatten riesen Spa\u00df und waren begeistert von dem, was sie an dem Tag so gesehen hatten. Ganz lieben Dank an alle R\u00fcben; wir hoffen dass wir euch allen die gleiche Gastfreundschaft eines Tages hier in den Staaten zeigen k\u00f6nnen.<\/strong>

\nSince this post is already long and full of so many pics, our wedding party will get its own post. I want to pick up on the day after when we climbed dragon rock (Drachenfels) and enjoyed a coffee and cake (German style) with some of my family in honor of my Grandma’s 77th birthday.
\nDa dieser Post ohnehin schon lang und voller Bilder ist, bekommt die Hochzeitsfeier ihren eigenen. Ich mache am Tag danach weiter, an dem wir den Drachenfels bestiegen und Kaffee und Kuchen (typisch deutsch) mit einem Teil meiner Familie zu Ehren des 77. Geburtstags meiner Oma genie\u00dfen durften.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nCoffee and cake was served at this beautiful old caf\u00e9 that had a very German and very decadent cake selection – no dinner necessary :-).
\nKaffee und Kuchen gab es in diesem wundersch\u00f6nen alten Kaffee, dass eine sehr deutsche und sehr dekadente Kuchenauswahl hatte – kein Abendessen mehr n\u00f6tig :-).<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nIn my enthusiasm to have „the Americans“ see as much as possible in the short time we had and didn’t want to leave it at „just“ Germany, we had planned a trip to Amsterdam on Monday. The weather was probably the least favorable we’d had all trip and getting up at 5:45 am didn’t help. I must say I love Amsterdam no matter how tired I am or how bad the weather is, but in hindsight I think it was just a little too much after the full days and short nights we’d had already. Still glad we went!
\nMeine enthusiastische Reiseplanung f\u00fcr „die Amis“ sollte nicht „nur“ Deutschland enthalten, also hatten wir am Montag nach der Party einen Tagestrip nach Amsterdam geplant. Das Wetter war das Schlechteste, was wir den ganzen Besuch \u00fcber hatten und Aufstehen um 5:45 Uhr war auch keine gro\u00dfe Freude. Ich liebe Amsterdam egal wie m\u00fcde ich bin und egal bei welchem Wetter<\/strong>, aber retrospektiv war es glaube ich ein bisschen viel nach den ohnehin schon vollen Tagen und kurzen N\u00e4chten davor. Ich bin trotzdem froh, dass wir da waren!<\/strong>

\n<\/a>We took it easier on our last days together and did things like shopping, going to playgrounds, swimming and drinking more K\u00f6lsch. Adam and I started our Sekt-travels early on and tried to drink a glass a day :-).
\nAn unseren letzten Tagen zusammen haben wir es etwas ruhiger angehen lassen und taten Dinge wie Einkaufen, Spielpl\u00e4tze, Schwimmen und mehr K\u00f6lsch trinken. Adam und ich hatten schon fr\u00fch damit angefangen Sekt zu trinken und versuchten pro Tag ein Glas davon aufzutreiben :-).<\/strong>

\n<\/a>On Brian and Andrea’s last day in K\u00f6ln we rode the Seilbahn again (see all A. Mapleses in one gondola) and generally enjoyed some more sunshine in the park.
\nAn Brian und Andreas letztem Tag in K\u00f6ln fuhren wir alle nochmal Seilbahn (siehe alle A. Mapleses in einer Gondel) und genossen ein bisschen Sonnenschein im Rheinpark.<\/strong>

\nAfter everybody else had gone back to the States, Adam and I had a few days left with just the two of us. But as you could expect we didn’t spend much time alone. On the contrary we tried to see as many people as possible and enjoyed – among many other things – some pool and lake time with friends, more K\u00f6lsch, more Sekt, more hiking and good food.
\nNachdem alle anderen in die Staaten zur\u00fcckgeflogen waren, hatten Adam und ich noch einige Tage zu zweit in Deutschland. Wie man sich denken kann verbrachten wir aber kaum Zeit davon alleine. Im Gegenteil – wir haben versucht so viele Leute nochmal zu sehen, wie m\u00f6glich und genossen – unter anderem – Pool- und Seebesuche mit Freunden, mehr K\u00f6lsch, mehr Sekt, mehr Wandern und gutes Essen.<\/strong>

\nWith my parents we went to the town of Ingelheim for an exhibition and explored the Roman remains of the city afterwards (also after a glass of Sekt to regain our strengh, lol).
\nMit meinen Eltern sind wir f\u00fcr eine Kunstausstellung einen Tag lang nach Ingelheim gefahren und erkundeten nach der Ausstellung die r\u00f6mischen \u00dcberreste in der Stadt (nach St\u00e4rkung mit einem glass Sekt nat\u00fcrlich, lol).<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nWe happened to be there just as a 30-minute Organ concert started at the old church so we stayed of course.
\nWir waren zuf\u00e4llig da, als in der alten Kirche ein 30-min\u00fctiges Orgelkonzert startete und h\u00f6rten uns dieses nat\u00fcrlich an.

\nAnd last but not least we took the scenic Rhine-route back home (I had planned on taking it by train with Adam last year and then accidentally booked the quick route via Frankfurt).
\nZum guten Tagesabschluss fuhren wir \u00fcber die malerische Rhein-Route zur\u00fcck (Ich wollte sie mit Adam schon im letzten Jahr im Zug gefahren sein und hatte dann aus Versehen doch die schnelle Variante \u00fcber Frankfurt gebucht).<\/strong>
