Don’t be fooled by this entry’s title – lazy summerdays are not happening around here ^^. With how little we have Alyssa and Owen this summer, all the excitement has to be crammed into very few days. So this week we had a 36-hour birthday party for Alyssa (including a dentist visit), a hike& swim in Columbia and family coming into town on the slab.
\nLasst euch nicht vom Titel des Eintrags<\/strong> t\u00e4uschen – faule Sommertage gibt es hier keine ^^. Da wir Alyssa und Owen im Laufe des Sommers nur so selten sehen, <\/strong>muss aller Spa\u00df in wenige Tage gequetscht werden. Also gab es diese Woche eine 36-Stunden Geburtstagsfeier f\u00fcr Alyssa (inklusive Zahnarzt-Besuch), <\/strong>einen Mini Wander- und Schwimmtrip nach Columbia und Adam’s Cousines Ankunft mit Kindern<\/strong> bei seinen Eltern.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alyssa’s birthday was on Monday and the kids got here that night. On Tuesday morning, we picked up one of her friends and headed to Mark Twain Lake to a waterpark named the Splash Landing. I took no pictures, so I borrowed these below elsewhere. It was not a bad little park, but it is old and once again Owen is still too little to do most things. The contraption you see in the first picture (blue and red-striped) was by far the funnest: it was a toilet bowl, so you were shot into that round part by a slide and then – after more or less rounds in the bowl – dumped into the water through a hole in the middle. Quite fun that one :). There was also an extremely lazy river (booooring) and a wave pool (see second pic). So as you can imagine the slides were by far the funnest part. Adam and I got to do them a few times whenever we could convince the girls to play with Owen in the little kids‘ pool for a while. Other than that the girls got to roam freely and had a blast – as did Owen – he really liked the lazy river and the wave pool. The food in the park was pretty horrible however and of course you weren’t allowed to bring your own. The usual…<\/p>\n

Alyssas Geburtstag war am Montag und die Kinder kamen am Montag Abend zu uns. Dienstag fr\u00fch haben wir eine von Alyssas Freundinnen abgeholt und sind nach Mark Twain Lake in einen Wasserpark names Splash Landing gefahren. Ich habe dort keine Fotos gemacht, sondern die beiden unten anderweitig ausgeliehen.<\/strong> Der Park war nicht \u00fcbel. nur recht alt und wieder einmal war Owen noch zu klein um alles mitzumachen.<\/strong> Das blau-rot gestreifte Teil im ersten Foto war definitiv das Highlight. Es ist quasi eine riesen Klosch\u00fcssel in die man per Rutsche gelangt und nach mehr oder weniger Runden in der Sch\u00fcssel durch ein Loch in der Mitte ins Wasser plumpst.<\/strong> Das hat echt Spa\u00df gemacht :). Es gab au\u00dferdem einen extrem langsamen Wasserkanal (laaaaaangweilig) und ein Wellenbecken (siehe zweites Foto). Ihr k\u00f6nnt es euch also vorstellen: Die Rutschen waren das Beste. Adam und ich konnten immerhin alle ausprobieren und ein paar mehrfach fahren – solange die M\u00e4dels bereit waren mit Owen im Kinderbereich zu spielen. Sie durften sonst machen was sie wollten und haben es sehr genossen – Owen ebenfalls, er fand den Wasserkanal super und das Wellenbecken auch. Das Essen im Park war dagegen echt \u00fcbel und nat\u00fcrlich durfte man selbst nichts mitbringen. Das \u00dcbliche halt<\/strong>…

\nAfter we got back home (all of us rather exhausted from the sun and water), two more girls joined the party and all three guests stayed for a sleepover. As Adam had assured me „10-year old girls are easy“ and they were – they even let Owen join the fun and let him play with them quite a bit. One of them had to leave the next morning, the other two stayed until late Wednesday – so quite the extended party, I would say. Luckily the weather did good – the regular afternoon downpour did not come on either day (it did rain& thunderstorm at night though).
\nAlyssa had lost a part of her tooth two weeks ago (the day before the Alabama trip) but not been taken to the dentist by her Mom, so unfortunately for her we made her an appointment on Wednesday afternoon to get the rest of that tooth removed. She was less than pleased since her friends were still around and was terrified of the shot – so terrified that she tried to dig out the tooth herself in the bathroom for at least 20 mins. We went anyway and I got to hear her scream from the waiting room (she goes in by herself always), but in the end all was well of course. Everyone wanted to see the hole and the numb lip was the source of funny faces and sounds for hours.
\nNachdem wir wieder zuhause waren (alle ziemlich ersch\u00f6pft vom Wasser und der Hitze), kamen zwei weitere Freundinnen von Alyssa und alle drei M\u00e4dels blieben \u00fcber Nacht. Adam hatte mir versichert dass 10-j\u00e4hrige M\u00e4dels total pflegeleicht seien und das waren sie – sie haben sogar recht viel mit Owen gespielt und ihn bei allem M\u00f6glichen mitmachen lassen. <\/strong>Eine der 3 musste am n\u00e4chsten Morgen weg, der Rest blieb bis am sp\u00e4ten Nachmittag – eine ganz sch\u00f6n ausgedehnte Party w\u00fcrde ich sagen. Gl\u00fccklicherweise war das Wetter super und der in den letzten Wochen \u00fcbliche Nachmittags-Sch\u00fctt blieb aus (es hatte nachts geregnet und gewittert).
\nVor 2 Wochen (am Tag vor unserem Alabama Trip) hat Alyssa einen Teil ihres Zahns verloren und da ihre Mutter sie seither nicht zum Zahnarzt gebracht hatte, hatten wir ihr einen Termin zur Entfernung des Rests am Mittwoch Nachmittag gemacht. Sie war nat\u00fcrlich alles andere als begeistert, vor allem weil ihre Freundinnen noch da waren und sie hatte vor allem Angst vor der Bet\u00e4ubungsspritze. So viel Angst, dass sie 20 Minuten lang selbst versucht hat den Zahn herauszuziehen. Wir mussten trotzdem hin und ich durfte ihrem Gebr\u00fcll aus dem Wartezimmer lauschen (sie m\u00f6chte grunds\u00e4tzlich alleine ins Behandlungszimmer), aber am Ende war es nat\u00fcrlich alles kein Problem. Alle wollten das Loch sehen und die taube Lippe war f\u00fcr mehrere Stunden lang eine Quelle lustiger Ger\u00e4usche und Gesichter.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nOn Thursday we met Adam’s co-worker Willa and her son Wyatt in Columbia for a little hike to a cave named the Devil’s icebox. None of us knew exactly what to expect or where the cave’s name came from. The latter was easily answered when climbing down to it – there was a huge drop in temperature and boy did that feel good. It was possible to explore the cave to a certain degree which was rather exciting (albeit our non-preparation – we only had a cellphone flashlight). Afterwards we walked down another little trail and continued on to Stephen’s park with its fountains and a little beach at the lake which was great fun for the kids. Of course a day like this had to be topped off with some icecream. And both kids fell asleep on the way home ^^.
\nAm Donnerstag haben wir Adams Kollegin Willa mit ihrem Sohn Wyatt in Columbia getroffen um eine kleine Wanderung zu einer H\u00f6hle names „Des Teufels Eisschrank“ zu machen. Keiner von uns wusste so ganz genau, was da auf uns zukam oder woher der Name der H\u00f6hle stammte. Die Antwort auf diese Frage bekamen wir prompt, als wir zur H\u00f6hle hinabstiegen – es war mindestens 10\u00b0 k\u00e4lter und man f\u00fchlte sich das gut an. Man konnte die H\u00f6hle ein St\u00fcck weit begehen und das war ziemlich cool (trotz mangelnder Vorbereitung – wir hatten nur ein Handylicht). Danach sind wir noch ein bisschen durch den Wald gestapft und dann zu Stephen’s Park gefahren. Dort gibt es ein paar Font\u00e4nen und einen Strand am See und somit Wasserspa\u00df f\u00fcr die Kinder. Nat\u00fcrlich musste ein solcher Tag mit Eis-Essen beschlossen werden. Und beide Kinder sind auf dem Weg nachhause im Auto eingeschlafen ^^.

\nOn Friday afternoon we went on a rather spontaneous trip to Hannibal (we drove the kids halfway to their Mom’s which hadn’t been planned for this week) and Adam and I decided to try LaBinnah bistro which had popped up on our search whenever we had first looked for a restaurant there months ago. It was a great surprise and hands down the best restaurant I’ve ever been to in Missouri. It looked like a French bistro had met a Turkish tea room and all of this set up in a 100-year old American house’s living room. It was very quirky but the service was impeccable and the food truely amazing. They have a very large menu for such a small place and it mixes Turkish and Mediterranean cuisine with Caribbean and American spices and ingredients – it is a very well done mix indeed. The quality of our food was outstanding and the atmosphere was great – I kind of want to move in there :-).
\nAm Freitag nachmittag fuhren wir eher spontan Richtung Hannibal (obwohl es eigentlich diese Woche nicht geplant war, haben wir die Kinder den halben Weg zu ihrer Mutter gebracht<\/strong>), also beschlossen Adam und ich kurzerhand ein Bistro auszuprobieren, was uns vor Monaten \u00fcber den Weg lief als wir zum ersten Mal Restaurants in der Gegend gesucht hatten. Es war eine tolle \u00dcberraschung und ohne Konkurrenz das beste Restaurant in dem ich in Missouri je war. Es sah aus als ob ein franz\u00f6sisches Bistro mit einer t\u00fcrkischen Teestube<\/strong> zusammengesto\u00dfen<\/strong> war und das im Wohnzimmer eines 100-Jahre alten<\/strong> amerikanischen Wohnhauses. Es war total schrullig aber der Service war tadellos und das Essen wirklich gro\u00dfartig. Es gab eine wirklich lange Speisekarte f\u00fcr ein so kleines Restaurant und sie war ein Mix aus t\u00fcrkischer und mediteraner K\u00fcche mit karibischen Gew\u00fcrzen und amerikanischen Zutaten – tolle Umsetzung jedenfalls. Die Essens-Qualit\u00e4t war spitzenm\u00e4\u00dfig und die Atmosph\u00e4re einfach total nett – ich w\u00fcrde gerne einziehen :-).<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nAfter dinner we went on a little walk around downtown and marveled at the Mississippi that had started to flood a week prior. This year has marked more rain in Missouri than during their worst recorded flood ever of 1993 – the only reason we’re not all flooded is because it’s hot enough to dry off to a certain degree before a new rainfall in most places.
\nNach dem Essen haben wir noch einen Spaziergang durch Hannibals Innenstadt gemacht und den Mississippi bestaunt, der vor ca. einer Woche \u00fcber die Ufer getreten ist. Dieses Jahr hat es in<\/strong> Missouri mehr geregnet als im Jahr der bisher schlimmsten aufgezeichneten Flutkatastrophe im Jahr 1993. Der einzige Grund warum nicht alles \u00fcberflutet ist, ist dass es zwischen den Regenf\u00e4llen warm genug ist um einiges an Wasser verdunsten zu lassen – zumindest an den meisten Stellen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nThere are also news from the yard and garden: we finally fixed the last broken piece of lattice on our deck the week before last and got the garden covered with weed block. We also did some landscaping around the deck (see first picture) and are now quite proud of how good it looks and happy to be done. We’re putting up some sticks to hold up our tomato plants this week, but everything else is done. Do not our monstrous mint plant (in the little metal tub in picture no. 1) – we need some rum.
\nEs gibt auch noch Neuigkeiten aus dem Garten<\/strong>: Wir haben endlich das letzte zerbrochene St\u00fcck<\/strong> Lattenzaun unter der Veranda ersetzt und „Unkraut-Unterdr\u00fccker-Folie“ im Garten ausgelegt<\/strong>. Au\u00dferdem haben wir ein bisschen Gartenbau betrieben und den Garten unterhalb der Veranda versch\u00f6nert (siehe erstes Bild). Jetzt sind wir ziemlich stolz und gl\u00fccklich, dass wir endlich fertig sind. Diese Woche kommen noch ein paar St\u00f6cke zur Unterst\u00fctzung der Tomatenpflanzen in den Garten und dann wars das. Bitte beachtet die monstr\u00f6se Minze (in der Metalwann im ersten Bild) – we need some rum!<\/strong><\/p>\n
