\nSticky. That’s Alabama in one word. And yes, I know I’ve been complaining about the heat and humidity and Missouri. Well guess what? I still do ^^. But I have learned that it can be much much worse.
\nOk, let me back it up. As planned, we left on June 12th to visit Adam’s brother Brian, his wife Andrea and their kids Sydney and Dylan in Huntsville, Alabama. We picked up Owen and Alyssa on the way and slowly but steadily made our way South. Our trip took about 12 hours, but we weren’t in a hurry so no big deal. Everyone was very excited to get out of the car anyhow :). We had a great Southern BBQ Dinner that first night (bbq-ed meat stuffed in a potato with cheese and sour cream – wait, way had I never heard of that before??) and fell into a deep and dreamless sleep soon thereafter (had I mentioned that Adam and I got up at 5:40 that morning?).
\nKlebrig. Das ist Alabama zusammengefasst in einem Wort. Und ja, ich wei\u00df ich habe mich vorher diverse Male \u00fcber die Hitze und Luftfeuchtigkeit in Missouri beschwert. Ratet mal – das werde ich auch weiterhin tun ^^. Aber ich habe gelernt, dass es noch viel viel schlimmer sein kann.
\nIch fange mal von vorne an: Wie geplant sind wir am 12. Juni morgens gestartet, um Adams Bruder Brian, seine Frau Andrea und deren Kinder Sydney und Dylan in Huntsville Alabama zu besuchen. Alyssa und Owen haben wir auf dem Weg eingesammelt und uns dann langsam aber stetig gen S\u00fcden vorgearbeitet. Insgesamt hat unsere Fahrt rund 12 Stunden gedauert, aber wir waren nicht in Eile, also alles kein Problem. Alle waren trotzdem sehr gl\u00fccklich, aus dem Auto herauszukommen :). Am ersten Abend gabs super gutes und typisches S\u00fcdstaaten Essen – gegrillt versteht sich (gegrilltes und in BBQ-Sauce gerolltes Fleisch in einer Ofenkartoffel mit K\u00e4se und Creme Fraiche – Moment mal, warum habe ich davon voher nie geh\u00f6rt??) und recht bald danach fielen wir alle in tiefen und traumlosen Schlaf (hatte ich erw\u00e4hnt, dass Adam und ich um 5:40 Uhr aufgestanden waren?).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Day 1 greeted us with brilliant sunshine, but it took only a minute or two outside to notice that the sun was accompanied by more than 90% humidity and it was already 80sth outside before 8 a.m. So needless to say nobody minded a trip to the pool (as soon as it opened) in the early afternoon – and nobody could get into the water quickly enough after the 5 minute walk there. Which lead me to another discovery about Alabama – it’s best enjoyed from inside a pool ;). I’m joking of course – we actually got to hang out in Downtown Huntsville that night and it seems to be a great town with lots of things to do. Like concerts in the park. Which is what the grown-ups got to do that night. With lawn chairs, wine, beer and music it was also very bear- and enjoyable (albeit sticky).
\nI should also say that the only reason we all made it till the evening was a 3-hour nap in the afternoon, lol.
\nTag 1 begr\u00fc\u00dfte uns mit strahlendem Sonnenschein – es brauchte allerdings nur 1-2 Minuten drau\u00dfen um festzustellen, dass die Sonne von \u00fcber 90% Luftfeuchtigkeit begleitet wurde und es hatte bereits mehr als 26\u00b0 vor 8 Uhr morgens. Kein Wunder also, dass keiner etwas gegen einen Pool-Besuch am fr\u00fchen Nachmittag einzuwenden hatte (sobald dieser \u00f6ffnete) und keine(r) konnte nach dem 5-Minuten Spaziergang dorthin fr\u00fch genug ins k\u00fchle Nass springen. Dies f\u00fchrte mich zu einer weiteren Entdeckung in Sachen Alabama – man genie\u00dft es am Besten in einem Pool ;). Nur Spa\u00df nat\u00fcrlich – wir bekamen am selben Abend einen Eindruck von der Innenstadt und es scheint eine super Stadt mit vielen interessanten Ausgeh- und Ausflugsm\u00f6glichkeiten zu sein. Wie z.B. den Konzerten im Park. Eines davon konnten die Erwachsenen an diesem Abend genie\u00dfen. Mit Klappst\u00fchlen, Wein, Bier und Musik war der Abend \u00e4u\u00dferst gut auszuhalten und sehr nett (aber klebrig).<\/strong>
\nIch sollte noch dazusagen, dass der einzige Grund daf\u00fcr, dass wir solange wachbleiben konnten eine 3-Stunden Siesta am Nachmittag war ^^.<\/strong>

\nThe kids had a great time because they got to play with their cousins non-stop, hang out at the neighborhood pool and go out to eat things like frozen yogurt – who wouldn’t?
\nAlle Kinder hatten ebenfalls eine super Zeit, da sie ausgiebigst mit ihrer Cousine\/ Cousin spielen, im Pool planschen und Dinge wie Frozen Yogurt essen konnten – wer h\u00e4tte das nicht genossen?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nOur days really didn’t consist of much but pool time – there was no way to spend more than a few minutes at a time outside and even inside the ac could barely keep up. I myself have rarely been so exhausted just from heat and don’t envy the Alabamians their next two months…
\nUnsere Tage bestanden haupts\u00e4chlich aus Pool-Besuchen – man konnte es anders nicht mehr als ein paar Minuten drau\u00dfen aushalten und die Klimaanlage im Haus konnte kaum mithalten. Ich selbst war selten in meinem Leben so ersch\u00f6pft durch Hitze und bin kein bisschen neidisch auf die n\u00e4chsten 2 Monate, die die Maples in Alabama aushalten m\u00fcssen…<\/strong><\/p>\n

There was also time for a girls‘ night out and what a fun one it was. Great food and more than just a few good laughs with „Bridget Jones‘ Diary“ were the perfect ending to our Sunday!
\nAm Sonntag Abend war tats\u00e4chlich Zeit f\u00fcr einen M\u00e4delsabend und der war super – leckeres Essen und massig Gel\u00e4chter bei „Schokolade zum Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck“ machten es zu einem perfekten Abschluss unseres Sonntags!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nMonday – after hanging out the pool, watergun fights and tossing kids into the water over and over for a few hours, we were feeling fairly tortured at Dylan’s and Sydney’s dive meet – the only people allowed in the water were the divers – everybody else got to stand around the pool (in mid-90ies weather with the sun shining straight at us). Luckily it only took about 45 mins and we were all happy to be back inside afterwards.
\nWhat you’re seeing in that last picture is my awesome sister-in-law (who just so happens to be a physical therapist) teaching me a few excercises to finally get my shoulder pain defeated. I’ve been doing them ever since and can’t complain (other than being a little sore from the excercises themselves).

\nAm Montag, nachdem wir einige Stunden lang im und am Pool waren, Wasserpistolen-Kriege gef\u00fchrt und immer wieder Kinderweitwerfen ge\u00fcbt hatten, war abends ein Spring-Wettbewerb angesetzt an dem Sydney und Dylan teilnahmen. Der Wettbewerb selbst hat nicht sehr lange gedauert, aber es war trotzdem eine totale Tortur – au\u00dfer den Springern durfte niemand im Wasser sein, sprich wir anderen standen bei \u00fcber 30\u00b0 in der prallen Sonne. Wir waren jedenfalls alle sehr froh, als es nach ca. 45 Minuten vorbei war und wir wieder ins Haus konnten.
\nIm letzten Bild seht ihr hoffentlich das Ende meiner Schulter- und Nackenschmerzen – meine gro\u00dfartige Schw\u00e4gerin (ihres Zeichens Physiotherapeutin) hat mir einige \u00dcbungen beigebracht, mit denen ich die betroffene Muskulatur st\u00e4rken kann. Ich habe die \u00dcbungen seither jeden Tag gemacht und kann mich nicht beschweren (au\u00dfer vielleicht \u00fcber den leichten Muskelkater den sie ausl\u00f6sen).<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nAnd then – believe it or not – we had time to spare on the way back (because we dropped off the kids with their Mom but couldn’t be there before a certain time). So we made a little spontaneous extra stop. At the Zoo in St. Louis :). We only had an hour but that was plenty to see the hippos, elephants and some other animals along the way.
\nUnd dann – kaum zu glauben – hatten wir pl\u00f6tzlich zu viel Zeit auf der R\u00fcckfahrt (da die Kids zur\u00fcck zu ihrer Mutter gingen, konnten wir sie nicht vor einer bestimmten Zeit abgeben). Also gabs einen spontanen Extra-Halt. Im Zoo in St. Louis :). Dort hatten wir zwar nur eine Stunde, aber das hat gereicht um bei den Nilpferden, Elefanten und einigen Tieren unterwegs vorbeizuschauen<\/strong>.

\nIt was a great trip and we all had a lot of fun. However three days of 8 people (and two dogs) in one house is quite enough ^^ – so we were happy to be going home and the Alabamians were happy to have their house back to themselves. I’m looking forward to going back already anyway!
\nEs war ein super Besuch in Alabama und wir alle hatten viel Spa\u00df. Allerdings waren 3 ganze Tage mit 8 Leuten (und 2 Hunden) in einem Haus durchaus genug ^^ – wir waren daher froh, wieder heimzufahren und die Alabama-Maples auch nicht traurig, ihr Haus wieder f\u00fcr sich zu haben. Ich freue mich trotzdem schon sehr auf den n\u00e4chsten Besuch!<\/strong>

\nThere are also some news on the bureaucracy front: I’ve been informed by the government that they are currently expecting not to need to interview me in person for my adjustment of status. That would of course be awesome because I wouldn’t have to drive to Kansas City or St. Louis anymore. They also told me my case should be decided within the next 6 months. So hopefully I’ll turn into a permanent resident before this year is over.
\nI did however have one interview this week. My first one for a job! It was with Truman State University in Kirksville and I thought it really went well. I should know within a week or two if it’s a „yay“ or a „nay“ (so fingers crossed!).<\/p>\n

Es gibt auch mal wieder Neuigkeiten an der B\u00fcrokratie-Front: Die Regierung hat mich dar\u00fcber informiert, dass sie im Moment nicht rechnet, mich f\u00fcr meine Status-Anpassung nochmal interviewen zu m\u00fcssen. Das w\u00e4re nat\u00fcrlich super, weil ich dann nicht nochmal nach Kansas City oder St. Louis fahren m\u00fcsste. Au\u00dferdem kann ich eine Entscheidung innerhalb der n\u00e4chsten 6 Monate erwarten. Also bin ich hoffentlich bis Jahresende im Besitz einer dauernden Aufenthalts- und Arbeitsgenehmigung.
\nEin Interview hatte ich diese Woche trotzdem. Das erste f\u00fcr einen Job! Dieses fand mit der Truman State University in Kirksville statt und lief echt gut.
