<\/p>\n Our seedlings are coming along nicely – we’ve been able to plant butternut squash and cucumber in our garden already and we’ve transferred a lot of the other plants to bigger pots as well as started some new seeds. Hopefully our garden will be going well by the end of May – I for one can’t wait to have fresh oregano again (impossible to purchase around here). Seitdem es sch\u00f6n geworden ist, haben wir zahlreiche V\u00f6gel beobachtet die versucht haben ihre Nester in unseren Regenabflussrohren zu bauen (hier ist es \u00fcblich an jeder Seite des Hauses eine Regenrinne zu haben, also gibt es vier). Das hat uns wenig erfreut – vor allem weil die V\u00f6gel nat\u00fcrlich alles rundherum vollschei*** – den Rasen, die Veranda, und die Einfahrt\/ Autos. Es war klar, dass wir etwas unternehmen mussten und als gute Heimwerker-Sch\u00fclerin habe ich mich der neuen Herausforderung nat\u00fcrlich prompt gestellt. Das Dach geh\u00f6rt ohnehin nicht zu Adams Lieblingspl\u00e4tzen (er hat wenig Freude an H\u00f6hen). Schritt 1: Wir haben im Baumarkt Abdeckungen aus Metall gekauft, die man in die Regenrinne stecken kann. Die cleveren Viecher hatten die Teile innerhalb eines Tages wieder aus der Rinne gezogen. Schritt 2: Nochmal versuchen und fester in der Rinne befestigen. Resultat: Dieses Mal hat es nur wenige Stunden gedauert, bis die V\u00f6gel die Abdeckung wieder rausgezogen hatten. Schritt 3: Die Abdeckung zerschneiden und um die Eing\u00e4nge zu den Regenrinnen herum festkleben. An diesem Punkt waren wir diese Woche und ich halte nun den Dachbesteigungsrekord mit 5x an einem Tag ^^. Es w\u00e4re nat\u00fcrlich keine Heimwerkerei, wenn nicht auch etwas schief gegangen w\u00e4re. In diesem Fall habe ich aus Versehen wohl erfolgreich einen Vogel in der Regenrinne eingesperrt. Zu meiner Verteidigung sei gesagt: Es muss ein ziemlich bl\u00f6der Vogel sein, da ich schon mind. 15 Minuten auf dem Dach hantiert hatte bevor ich zu seiner Rinne kam – anscheinend nicht genug f\u00fcr ihn um abzuhauen. Trotzdem tat er uns nat\u00fcrlich leid, also bin ich wieder aufs Dach gestiegen und hab das frisch geklebte Gitter wieder aufgebogen um ihn herauszulassen. Wir haben die Rinne \u00fcber Nacht offengelassen und fr\u00fchestens 16 Stunden sp\u00e4ter einen Versuch mit einem neuen Gitter gestartet. Ratet mal was dann geschah? 1) Der Vogel war immer noch in der Regenrinne und 2) ein weiterer Vogel hatte die Steine verschoben, die das Gitter beschweren sollten w\u00e4hrend der Kleber fest wurde. Also habe ich den Wasserschlauch ausgepackt, mit aufs Dach genommen und eine gro\u00dfe Menge Wasser durch die Regenrinne gejagt, in der Hoffnung den Vogel einfach herauszusp\u00fclen. Wir haben sogar ein St\u00fcck Regenrinne abgeschraubt. Ohne Erfolg. 2 Stunden nach dem Wasserfall und offener Regenrinne haben wir diese wieder angeschraubt und das Gitter erneut festgeklebt. Die ganze Zeit \u00fcber hatte man nichts geh\u00f6rt und keinerlei Vogel-Aktivit\u00e4ten wahrgenommen. Nat\u00fcrlich ging das Geflatter in der Sekunde, in der ich das Gitter wieder festgeklebt hatte wieder los. Jetzt warten wir halt drauf, dass der Vogel stirbt. Bl\u00f6der Vogel. Er hatte seine Chance(n).<\/strong><\/p>\n Meine Dach-Exkursionen haben in den Kindern ein unstillbares Verlangen nach einer Dachbesteigung geweckt und Owen hat sich dieses Mal auch hochgetraut (nach dem ersten Mal wollte er nat\u00fcrlich nicht wieder runter und ein weiteres Mal mit hochklettern ^^). Alyssa durfte am n\u00e4chsten Tag auch mal aufs Dach und ich war glaube ich runde 10 Mal diese Woche dort oben. As promised to the neighbor ladies I’ve heralded spring by mowing the yard. \nUnsere Pfl\u00e4nzchen sind zum gr\u00f6\u00dften Teil super gewachsen und wir konnten in der vergangenen Woche schon Butternut K\u00fcrbisse und Gurken in den Garten setzen. Au\u00dferdem haben wir eine ganze Reihe weiterer Pfl\u00e4nzchen in gr\u00f6\u00dfere T\u00f6pfe umgetopft und weitere Samen ges\u00e4t. Ich hoffe darauf, dass unser Garten bis Ende Mai gut voran kommt und kann es kaum erwarten, endlich mal wieder frischen Oregano zu haben (den kriegt man hier n\u00e4mlich nirgends).<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/a>
\nSince the weather has gotten nice, birds have been frequenting our roof in attempts to build nests in our down spout. Of course that’s a less than desirable prospect plus they’ve been pooping all over the yard, deck and our driveway\/ cars so we knew we had to do sth about it. Not being particularly fond of heights, the roof is certainly not Adam’s favorite place. As I’m ever willing to add to my newly found home improvment skill, I happily took on the roof jobs. Step 1: we bought some covers for the drain pipes in the hopes that that would keep the birds from nesting in there. The clever little buggers had them pulled out after less than a day. Step 2: Try to put them in more firmly. Result: No deal, pulled out within hours. Step 3: Cut up the covers and glue the screens into the gutter and over the pipes. That was what we did this week and I’m currently holding a personal record of 5 times on the roof in one day ^^. But it wouldn’t be proper home improvement if sth hadn’t gone wrong. In this case that was me apparently trapping a bird in one of the pipes that I glued the screen over. To my defense: it must be a pretty dumb bird because I had been up on the roof working on a different pipe for at least 15 mins – apparently that wasn’t enough to make it fly away. We really felt bad for the bird so I got back on the roof later that day and cut the screen open again so the bird could fly out. We left it open over night and attempted to glue a new screen over the pipe after about 16 hours. Guess what? 1) The bird was still in there and 2) a different bird pushed away the stones that were supposed to help keep the screen down while the glue hardened. So I got the hose out and took it to the roof and we flushed a considerable amout of water down the pipe in the hopes of flushing out the bird. We even took a part of the drain pipe out. But no. After having flushed and leaving the pipe open for at least 2 hours we glued the new screen on again and added an extra stone to keep it down. The entire time when the pipe was open and the screen wasn’t attached, there was no sound and no apparent bird activity. But of course it started fluttering again the second the screen was glued back down. So now we’re just waiting for it to die soon. Stupid bird. It had its chance(s).<\/p>\n<\/a>
\nMy trips to the roof did instill a desire to come up in the kids as well and Owen finally dared coming up (then of course he didn’t want to come down again and had to come up a second time as well ^^). Alyssa also got her chance the next day – in all I think I must have been up there close to ten times this week.
\nI should tell you that we own no tall ladder so I’ve been climbing up there with a combination of our step ladder and Adam’s shoulders. That is until we found the old pool ladder under the deck – now I can do it all by myself.<\/p>\n
\nIch sollte noch dazu sagen, dass wir keine hohe Leiter haben und es mit einer Kombination aus kleiner Leiter und Adams Schultern dort hoch geschafft haben. Bis wir die Leiter des alten Schwimmbeckens unter der Veranda gefunden haben, jetzt komm ich auch alleine hoch und runter.

\nDon’t think mowing and roof action were all the things that happened – we also got the front of our house mulched and finally finished staining our deck as well as the neighbors old swinging bench that we inherited earlier in the week. Oh and we weeded the garden. Yay…
\nGlaubt nur nicht, dass M\u00e4hen und Dachbesteigungen alles war was diese Woche so passiert ist. Wir haben es endlich geschafft im Vorgarten Mulch zu verteilen und die Veranda fertig gebeizt – ebenso wie eine kleine Sitzschaukel, die wir Anfang der Woche von den Nachbarn geerbt hatten. Oh und wir haben im Garten Unkraut gej\u00e4tet. Yay…<\/strong>
