Well, I\u2019ve officially been to Texas now \u2013 Dallas and the Dallas area to be precise. Adam had his annual conference there last week and I followed on Thursday afternoon. We had a packed 2.5 days and I feel like I still need to catch up on\u00a0some sleep, but it was a good time.
\nDallas itself was really not impressive \u2013 there are no doubt very nice parts of town and there are some great bars and restaurants, but\u00a0that being said, there wasn\u2019t a real lively downtown it seemed like (might have been the heat or time of day) and the museums that we went to were a) incredibly crowded or b) good, but not great.
\nJetzt war ich offiziell endlich mal im Bayern Amerikas \u2013 Texas also [man sagt doch gerne, dass die Bayern\u00a0sehr speziell sind und sowieso lieber ihr eigenes Land h<\/strong>\u00e4<\/strong>tten \u2013 das ist mit den Texanern genauso]. Um genauer zu sein waren wir in Dallas und Umgebung. Adam war dort zu seiner j<\/strong>\u00e4<\/strong>hrlichen Tagung und ich bin am Donnerstag hinterhergeflogen. Es waren 2.5 echt volle Tage und ich k<\/strong>\u00f6<\/strong>nnte gef<\/strong>\u00fc<\/strong>hlt mindestens eine Nacht extra schlafen, aber wir hatten Spa<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong>.
\nDallas selbst war nicht wirklich beeindruckend \u2013 ohne Zweifel hat es nette Stadtteile und tolle Restaurants und Bars, ABER, es gab kein so richtig belebtes Zentrum (vielleicht lag das auch nur an der Hitze oder der Tageszeit) und die Museen in denen wir waren entweder a) enorm <\/strong>\u00fc<\/strong>berf<\/strong>\u00fc<\/strong>llt oder b) gut, aber nicht gro<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong>artig.

\n<\/strong>Let me start from the top: we did eat in a very nice steakhouse on Thursday evening with some of Adam\u2019s co-workers and I should have taken a picture, because the view was wonderful. On Friday we spent our day in downtown Dallas \u2013 first we went to the museum that commemorates the JFK assassination (it\u2019s located in the building from which he was shot). It was kind of crazy to be in those places (the street where he got shot, the window from which he got shot) and they did a great job of presenting the details as well as the aftermath and a lot about JFK\u2019s life generally. What was not good at all was the fact that the place was super crowded and you literally had to stand in line to read every single thing \u2013 that got pretty old pretty quickly. So we did our best to weave through and focus on the things we were interested in the most.
\nIch fange besser mal vorne an: Am Donnerstag Abend waren wir mit ein paar Kollegen von Adam in einem tollen Steakhaus mit super Blick (davon habe ich leider kein Foto gemacht). Am Freitag haben wir den Tag in der Innenstadt von Dallas verbracht \u2013 zuerst in einem Museum rund um JFKs Leben und seinen Tod (das Museum befindet sich in dem Geb<\/strong>\u00e4<\/strong>ude aus dem heraus er erschossen wurde). Es war irgendwie komisch an der Stelle zu stehen, an der bzw. von der er erschossen wurde, aber das Museum war sehr gut und interessant gestaltet (es drehte sich um Kennedys gesamtes Leben, seinen Tod und die Untersuchungen und Verschw\u00f6rungen\u00a0danach). Was mal gar nicht gut war, war wie voll das Museum war \u2013 man stand ohne Witz in einer ewig langen, sich im Schneckentempo bewegenden Schlange \u2013 das war echt nervig, also haben wir ein paar Dinge <\/strong>\u00fc<\/strong>bersprungen und uns aufs die Teile konzentriert, die uns interessierten.<\/strong>

\nIn the afternoon we went to the Dallas Museum of Art which has a great layout and a nice collection \u2013 it was worth the visit, especially because it\u2019s free! Walking around outside was pretty brutal that day, because it was just really hot & humid outside, plus everything in Dallas is very spread out, so even if you walk for 30 minutes, it doesn\u2019t seem like you get very far.
\nAm Nachmittag waren wir im Kunstmuseum,\u00a0welches klasse ausgelegt ist und eine nette Kollektion besitzt \u2013 es war den Besuch wert, vor allem, weil der Eintritt frei war. Drau<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong>en herumzulaufen hat leider wenig Spa<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong> gemacht, da es echt hei<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong> und schw<\/strong>\u00fc<\/strong>l war. Au<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong>erdem ist alles in Dallas ziemlich weitl<\/strong>\u00e4<\/strong>ufig und man kam zu Fu<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong> nicht wirklich weit.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Maybe we should have gone to the Science\/Natural History Museum as well \u2013 it definitely looks cool from the outside (below that green arrow is a dinosaur skeleton in that glass box):
\nVielleicht h<\/strong>\u00e4<\/strong>tten wir dem Wissenschafts\/Naturkunde Museum ebenfalls einen Besuch abstatten sollen \u2013 es sah von au<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong>en definitiv sehr cool aus (siehe Dinosaurier Skelett in der Glasbox [unter dem gr<\/strong>\u00fc<\/strong>nen Pfeil]):

\n<\/strong>We had a rental car on our second day and decided to go to Fort Worth before driving to Frisco in the evening (spoiler alert: for the soccer game). After careful consideration, we did stop by the Fort Worth Stockyards, because I really wanted to see a live longhorn \u2013 and we did [they drive them through the stockyards twice a day for the tourists]:
\nAm 2. <\/strong>Tag hatten wir einen Mietwagen und waren als Erstes in Fort Worth \u2013 abends hatten wir Tickets f<\/strong>\u00fc<\/strong>r ein Fu<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong>ball Spiel in Frisco. Nach etwas Hin- und Her haben wir den ehemaligen Rinder-Viehhof besucht \u2013 dort werden als Touristen Attraktion immer noch 2x t<\/strong>\u00e4<\/strong>glich die heimischen Rinder (mit extra langen H<\/strong>\u00f6<\/strong>rnern) durchgetrieben und ich wollte gerne mal eines der besagten Rinder live und in Farbe sehen:

\n<\/strong>The rest of the stockyards is nothing but a tourist trap though \u2013 so we made our escape pretty quickly. The Museum of American Art was rated well and since it was still very hot & humid and we had already been outside more than we wanted to be that morning, that was our next stop (and a good one).
\nDer Rest des Viehhofs war wie erwartet total touristisch – daher sind wir so schnell wie m<\/strong>\u00f6<\/strong>glich weitergezogen. In Fort Worth gibt es ein gut bewertetes Museum Amerikanischer Kunst und dort waren wir als N<\/strong>\u00e4<\/strong>chstes \u2013 drau<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong>en war es weiterhin hei<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong> und schw<\/strong>\u00fc<\/strong>l und somit wenig einladend.

\n<\/strong>In the afternoon we drove to Frisco (all these places are about 45 minutes from each other \u2013 a little more if one is unprepared to pay for tolls), enjoyed a drink and dinner and then made our way to Toyota Stadium for the FC Dallas vs. Columbus Crew game. We were both excited for some soccer, but it was still very hot, so sitting outside was really not enjoyable. Additionally (as you can see below), the stadium was far from packed and then we had apparently picked the least exciting game of the weekend [we saw scores for the other games]. Ours ended 0-0 and\u00a0neither team looked good. FC Dallas is leading the league here, not sure how they accomplished that\u2026 anyway \u2013 we tried :-). They did sing \u201cDeep in the Heart of Texas\u201d before the game though, lol.
\nAm Nachmittag sind wir nach Frisco gefahren (all diese Orte sind ca. 45 Minuten voneinander entfernt \u2013 oder auch etwas mehr, wenn man keine Lust hat Maut zu bezahlen), genossen einen Cocktail und ein leckeres Abendessen und sind danach zum Toyota Stadion gegangen \u2013 FC Dallas gegen Columbus Crew. Wir hatten uns beide auf ein gutes Fu<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong>ballspiel gefreut, aber es war immer noch super hei<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong> und drau<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong>en sitzen somit kein Spa<\/strong>\u00df<\/strong>. Wie ihr auf den Fotos sehen k<\/strong>\u00f6<\/strong>nnt, war das Stadion alles andere als ausverkauft und anscheinend hatten wir das am Wenigsten spannende Spiel des Wochenendes gew<\/strong>\u00e4<\/strong>hlt [die Spielst<\/strong>\u00e4<\/strong>nde der restlichen Spiele wurden zwischendurch eingeblendet]. Das Spiel endete wie es begann \u2013 0-0 \u2013 und keiner der Vereine hat gut gespielt. Der FC Dallas ist Tabellenf<\/strong>\u00fc<\/strong>hrer und ich habe keine Ahnung, wie dieses Team das geschafft hat… na ja, was solls. Lustigerweise wurde direkt nach der Nationalhymne \u201eDeep in the Heart of Texas\u201c gesungen, das musste ich dokumentieren :-).

\n<\/strong>Conclusion: I\u2019d like to maybe go to San Antonio, Austin or Houston sometime, but I don\u2019t need to spend more time in Dallas. Oh wait, gotta go back in 2.5 weeks for work\u2026
\nAnd I have to say: not everything is bigger in Texas. In fact I couldn\u2019t name a single thing \u2013 except maybe for the longhorns\u2019 horns.
\nErgebnis: Ich w\u00fcrde gerne mal nach San Antonio, Austin oder Houston \u2013 nach Dallas muss ich nicht unbedingt nochmal zur\u00fcck. Moent, da war doch was \u2013 in 2,5 Wochen bin ich f\u00fcr die Arbeit wieder dort…
\nEntgegen aller Ger\u00fcchte ist im \u00dcbrigen nicht alles in Texas gr\u00f6\u00dfer. Ich w\u00fcsste spontan kein Beispiel \u2013 au\u00dfer vielleicht die H\u00f6rner der texanischen Rinder.<\/strong><\/p>\n
