Retrospectively our North Carolina trip seemed very short to us, but it was great – we got to go on a little hike, swim in a river, walk the Greensboro Science Center (incl. their small zoo) and eat lots of good food. We got too little sleep, but oh well.
This week we’re getting a lot of visitors – Liz is arriving today, Kasandra & her kids are getting to Macon tomorrow and Owen & Alyssa will be here for the weekend as well – so we’ll be crazy busy once again. Oh and did I mention San Diego is just around the corner (Liz is going there with me, then my conference starts and afterwards Adam will join me)? Story of our summers?!
Im Nachhinein war unser Besuch in North Carolina echt kurz, aber klasse – wir waren wandern, im Fluss schwimmen, im Greensboro Science Center (inkl. des kleinen Zoos) und haben jede Menge gutes Essen genossen. Wir haben definitiv zu wenig Schlaf gekriegt, aber was solls.
Diese Woche geht es gleich fröhlich weiter – heute kommt Liz an, Kasandra und ihre Kinder kommen morgen nach Macon und Owen & Alyssa werden am WE ebenfalls hier sein – wir werden also mal wieder dauer-beschäftigt sein. Und hatte ich erwähnt, dass unsere San Diego Reise ebenfalls vor der Tür steht (Liz fliegt mit mir hin, dann startet meine Konferenz und nach deren Ende kommt Adam)? So ist das halt bei uns im Sommer?!

Last week I went on a trip to Arkansas for work – more accurately, the Orscheln Farm & Home stores in Jane, MO and Springdale, AR. Since Bentonville, AR is right in the middle of the two, we spent our nights there. Bentonville was very cool – unexpectedly so for me – the downtown area is the nicest I have ever seen, they have a really cool art museum (Crystal Bridges, see pics 1&2) and awesome restaurants (got to try a couple) and paths for people on bicycles everywhere. And then there is Walmart HQ and all things Sam Walton, of course… We did go through the Walmart Museum and took a picture with Sam’s bust. Other than that those were 10-hour workdays and a 17-hour day last Thursday – so I was utterly pooped by Thursday night (and didn’t really get any recovery time this past weekend). Next up: Greensboro, NC (this is vacation, not work).
Letzte Woche war ich arbeitsweise in Arkansas unterwegs – um genau zu sein waren wir in Jane, MO und Springdale, AR. Da Bentonville, AR genau in der Mitte liegt, haben wir uns dort ein Hotel gesucht. Bentonville ist die Stadt, in der Walmarts Kommandozentrale gelegen ist und somit auch gefühlte 1 Million weitere Walmart Gebäude/Testläden und mehr. Nichtsdestotrotz war es eine wirklich coole Stadt: Der alte Stadtkern war richtig toll, die haben ein äußerst schickes Kunstmuseum (Crystal Bridges, siehe Bild 1&2), tolle Restaurants (wir haben 2 ausprobiert) und ohne Ende Pfade für Fahrradfahrer. Und dann natürlich absolut alles, was mit Walmart oder dessen Gründer Sam Walton zu tun hat… Wir waren im Walmart Museum (kostenlos und klein) und haben ein Foto mit Sams Büste gemacht. Ansonsten waren das zwei 10-Stunden Arbeitstage und einer mit 17 Stunden – entsprechend fertig war ich am Samstag Abend (und am WE war nicht wirklich Zeit für Erholung). Als nächstes auf dem Programm: Greensboro, North Carolina (Freizeit, keine Arbeit).

Then there was Germany’s first game in the soccer world cup yesterday – no joy to be found in that match, but at least I had a pretty decent (and quite authentic tasting) beer.
Dann war da ja auch gestern noch der WM-Auftakt Deutschlands… keine Freude muss ich sagen, aber immerhin hatte ich ein gutes (recht authentisch schmeckendes) Bier (aus einem Gaffel Glas, Adam aus einem Früh Glas, lol).

We are finding ourselves in week three of family visits here (more to come at the end of this month and in July). First of all we had the pleasure of welcoming my uncles to Macon (after meeting them in Chicago the weekend before). They timed their visit with Memorial weekend so we would have 3 days off to spend together as well as with the first really hot days of this year. Thanks to Dave & Paula we got to spend Saturday on the lake – which we all thoroughly enjoyed. I finally got to smoke the cigar Adam had given me 1.5 years ago!
Sunday we spent at home and at Bill & Deb’s (BBQ as requested by Wolfgang) and Markus got to go on his first (and subsequently a few more) four-wheeler ride – he said he liked them ;-). On Monday we showed them around Columbia a little.
Wir befinden uns zur Zeit in der dritten Woche der Familienbesuche (es folgen weitere am Ende diesen Monats und im Juli). Wir haben uns sehr gefreut, meine Onkels in Macon willkommen heißen zu dürfen – sie waren am Memorial Day Wochenende hier, an dem wir 3 Tage frei hatten. Ihr Besuch fiel mit den ersten richtig heißen Tagen zusammen, aber dank Dave & Paulas konnten wir den Samstag auf dem See verbringen – das war klasse. Ich habe endlich die Zigarre geraucht, die Adam mir vor anderthalb Jahren geschenkt hat!
Am Sonntag waren wir zum Grillen bei Bill & Deb (wie von Wolfgang gewünscht) – dort hat Markus seine ersten Quad-Fahrten genossen und behauptet, es habe ihm Spaß gemacht ;-). Am Montag haben wir den Tag in Columbia verbracht.

Last week, uncle Dan got to Macon, followed by Phylis & Larry on Saturday and the kids were in Macon this weekend as well. Bill & Deb bought a new bug zapper (presented by Anni) and we have found a great new way of doing family pictures. The weekend was spent with four-wheeler & lawnmower rides, washer tournaments and of course lots of eating & drinking (Larry always brings boxes full of booze we have to sample).
Letzte Woche kam Adams Onkel Dan in Macon an, dicht gefolgt von Phylis & Larry am Samstag und die Kinder waren ebenfalls am Wochenende bei uns. Bill & Deb haben einen neuen Moskito-Killer [Insektenabwehrlampe?] erstanden (präsentiert von Anni) und wir haben eine neue Art des Familienfotos erfunden. Das Wochenende wurde auf dem Quad & Rasenmäher, mit Spielen (washers ist gar nicht so leicht zu übersetzen – zwei Holzboxen stehen in einer bestimmten Entfernung zueinander und man wirft Unterlegscheiben aus Plastik von einer Seite auf die andere – in der Hoffnung die Box, oder besser noch das Rohr in der Mitte der Box zu treffen (für 1 bzw 3 Punkte) und natürlich mit Essen & Trinken (Larry bringt immer Kartons voller teurer Weine, Whiskeys und mehr zum Probieren) verbracht.
